Cultuurstrijd
De uitdrukking cultuurstrijd of cultuuroorlog is een vertaling van het Duitse Kulturkampf. Ze werd voor het eerst gebruikt in de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw om te verwijzen naar de machtsstrijd tussen de rooms-katholieke kerk en de Duitse regering, onder leiding van rijkskanselier Otto von Bismarck. Vandaag wordt het concept meer in het algemeen gebruikt om te verwijzen naar de strijd tussen tegenstrijdige culturele waarden binnen een samenleving. Met zijn theorie van culturele hegemonie stelde de Italiaanse marxistische journalist, filosoof en politicus Antonio Gramsci in de jaren 1920 hoe een cultureel diverse samenleving wordt gedomineerd door de groep die de massamedia, het onderwijs en andere grote instellingen controleert. Begin jaren 1990 introduceerde de socioloog James Davison Hunter het concept van cultuuroorlog in de VS, om de polarisatie van de samenleving langs ideologische lijnen – ‘conservatieven’ versus ‘progressieven’ – te beschrijven. De zogenaamde schoolstrijd in de negentiende en twintigste eeuw tussen het rijksonderwijs en het katholieke onderwijs rond de kwestie van religie in het onderwijs en de subsidiëring ervan, wordt gezien als een voorbeeld van cultuurstrijd in België.
